Description A grand view to be had of Railway Esplanade (as it was called back then).
The area between the Europa bowsers and the Railway Station is set up with an array of ordered seating and a dais ready to welcome the Queen and Duke on their NZ summer visit to Waipukurau. There were flower garlanded chains that led from the railway platform to the dias for the Queen's walk.
Likely it's one of Winlove's Commer articulated trucks parked opposite. (2015 info from Aub Ellen)
In the foreground, at the left are the Eropa bowsers that were owned at this time by Hastie & Waters - followed later by Jock McCorkindale - then Claude Rees. It had by then changed to Atlantic which later became part of Mobil. (2015 info from David Smith)
Kathie's maternal great-grandparents, James and Lillian Fergusson, had run the Leviathan Hotel (bottom right corner) back in the 1920's - 1930's. W Oliver was the proprietor in 1953.
